Staff Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
As a gay man over 50 years old and a stroke survivor living each day with physical challenges; Steve Pride understands that there are few community treasures greater than a radio station that each day gives voice to the marginalized and disenfranchised among us.
Steve pride has been a KPFK volunteer programmer for the past 12 years working on the weekly LGBT radio Magazine IMRU and his work on that show
has garnered five Golden Mike Awards from the RADIO AND TELEVISION NEWS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (RTNA). Steve currently serves on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the Washington D.C. based NATIONAL LESBIAN AND GAY JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION (NLGJA). He also heads the NLGJA Arts & Entertainment Reporters Caucus and serves on the Diversity Oversight Committee, the Fundraising/Development Task Force, the Chapter Diversity Programming Task Force, the LGBT Media Task Force and served as PRESIDENT of the NLGJA 150 member Los Angeles Chapter for four years.

He will draw on his leadership experience and journalism background to bring consistency and stability to the Local Station Board, while championing technological and common sense improvements to our recording/broadcast
facilities and giving voice to staff concerns.

Biography
1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?

ANSWER: I think I can make a difference.

2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?
ANSWER: In both cases the key is better communications. To commit to the lost art of LISTENING.

3. How could the station better serve its listeners?

ANSWER: Raise the bar on programming quality.

4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?

ANSWER: Revive community collectives and better define their role.

5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?

ANSWER: I think the LSB should have a responsibility to organize community fundraising events for KPFK.

6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.

What I would bring to the KPFK LAB is a love of radio journalism, proven leadership, the ability to listen to diverse opinions and help mold a consensus, vision and perhaps most importantly as a gay man, a person over 50 years old, and a stroke survivor living each day with physical challenges - I have a very personal commitment to the goal of inclusion and a belief in the Pacifica Mission.
