| Statement |
I am running for the KPFT Board in an effort to support one of the very few arenas for free speech and democracy in Houston. As a planet we are uniquely in a time of political opportunity and economic crisis. KPFT must remain a strong beacon of direction for our area. This will require a dedicated and intricately talented board. My aim is to be a strong part of such a board and to sustain the quality of KPFT as well as develop the changes that may be required.
I have an anthropology backtground with a masters in education counseling and I have been an activist for a number of important issues in Texas and beyond. It is my hope that I can contribute my time and energy to the KPFT board in such a way that, as we pull out of this economic quicksand, we will become stronger and better able to fight the good fight.
KPFT Candidate Questionnaire
1. Why do you want to be on the local station board?
Because KPFT is my favorite radio station and I want to make a positive difference in a challenging economic time.
2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFT and the community?
I will have to learn the intricacies of Pacifica. I"ve been to the Firehouse and spoken with Amy Goodman.
3. How could the station better serve its listeners?
More efficient in notifying the community about local protests where they can make a difference.
4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
It's essential that we connect with some of the Reverends in the Black community. That would be a place to start
5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
I will have to check with the treasurer so I don't stray from the mission and get KPFT in trouble but I have some creative ideas.
6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
A Master's in education and counseling as well as interning at American Hospice and Houston's Young Autism Project has given me valuable teaching and counseling skills. My BA is from Brown University in Cultural Anthropology. I am a member of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling and Professional Honor Society, a director of the Texas Home Owners Association Reform Board, Inc. 2004-2006. I was a Fort Bend ISD English Language Arts teacher from 2001-2004 and a member of the Foxborough, MA, Children's Museum steering committee and a trustee there as well (1988-1991).
7. On which Local Station Board committees are you interested in actively serving?
I don't know all the committees, but I have time to serve on more than one.
