Hello, my name is Margie Murray and I am running as a listener candidate for the board of KPFK.
As a long time listener of KPFK, I have found the perfect radio station - a place to go to get information that is outside of today's corporate funded media outlets. The KPFK mission of peace and justice is a noble one. It is a mission that I can truly commit to help support and strengthen with my time and creative energies to expand the listener base.
My passion for many of the issues brought up on the station dealing with human rights and peace have inspired me as an artist and writer. I am a regular listener of "Connect the Dots”" with Lila Garrett and she was instrumental in my decision to run for a spot on the local board. KPFK has the finest broadcasters to be found and I regularly turn to the station for political and cultural news.
As a long time peace activist, I co-authored with Brad Parker the first resolution against waterboarding and torture, "Defining "Water Boarding" as Torture and Eliminating its Practice by the United States Government" which was passed and adopted by the California State Democratic Party in June of 2008. I also co-authored with Marcy Winograd, "Stop California Law Enforcement Complicity in Federal Medical Marijuana Raids," "Support of Overturning the EPA's Rejection of California's Emission Standards" with Craig Athon and Sean Murray, and "Public Hearings on the Safety and Economic Impact of Mexican Cargo Trucks on U.S. Public Roadways" with Brad Parker. All of the above resolutions were adopted by the Los Angeles County and California Democratic Parties.
I am the newsletter editor for Valley Democrats United, a periodical in which we focus on current progressive ideas and promoting education on current events. I am involved in helping the homeless, environmental issues, net neutrality, single-payer healthcare, human rights, peace, and social justice.
Some of my biographical highlights include:

Margie Murray

1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
I believe in the mission of the KPFK and would like to help serve the radio station by expanding its listener base. The diverse opinions and views expressed on KPFK are rare in today's corporate driven media, and I would increase public awareness of KPFK.
2. How do you envision the Local station Board working the Pacifica Foundation, KPFK, and the community?
As a long peace activist and as a board member, I would work to further the Pacifica Foundation's mission to develop awareness of current issues through education, speaker series, community outreach events, publicity, and new media. Through these avenues, I would strive to spark greater interest in the community and bring new listeners to KPFK.
3. How could the station better serve its listeners?
I would like to see the station do more publicity and listener events to increase awareness of the station's role in our community. I think that the station might think of ways to make the blog more active, and possibly develop a newspaper style format in conjunction with the website with new media writers, poets and artists submitting work that coincides with the programming of on-air issues.
4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
I would promote education in the communities by finding leaders of the under-represented communities as possible speakers for events and dialog with the on air personalities, bring some programming into the schools and do research and polling to see how we are viewed and what their information needs are and how we might strive to meet them. Also, to offer the website in different languages.
5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFK should solicit?
I think that we should look into furthering grants from private family and corporate donors, as well as looking into special events which might increase funding.
6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
I believe that my affiliations with progressive and liberal democrats as well as my long involvement in issues of homelessness in Los Angeles County would be of value. I am also a writer for Valley Democrats United and the Los Angeles Progressive magazine and involved in various art groups in Los Angeles area.
