Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
My name is Sequoia Olivia Mercier. I owe a debt of gratitude to KPFK for waking me up 30 years ago. I am a mother and a published poet. I have been a member of the Anansi Writer's Workshop at The World Stage Performance Gallery in Leimert Park for more than twenty five years. I was the co-chair of the Los Angeles Free South Africa Movement for at least 3 years until Mandela was freed. I have worked as a Mental Health Counselor, RN for 30 years. I hold a Master's of Science degree in nursing with the designation of Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric / Mental Health. It is my intention to be cause in the matter of insuring the station continues and flourishes. As a member of the Local Station Board my skills in facilitating effective, positive communication will be an asset. I am interested in contributing to the conversation related to those things that are working well in our communities and between our communities with particular emphasis on the ways art and health affect these realities.

I will engage various communities of which I am a part in an ongoing conversation to educate about KPFK's existence, encourage listening to the station, encourage financial / volunteer support of the station, and to raise awareness of opportunities to become involved with the internal workings of the station. I will request to be on the agenda's of the organizations with which I interface at least once per quarter to disseminate information about KPFK programming and opportunities to support the station. In addition I will have individual, personal correspondences with those in my network to increase the influence of the station and to promote the diversity of the listening audience.

I envision the Local Station Board as the collective voice of KPFK, the vehicle by which local community concerns are conveyed to the Pacifica Foundation and as a conduit of resource / information sharing from the Pacifica Foundation back to the local. The station could better serve it's listeners by increasing coverage of things that are working well in and between our communities. I am interested in serving on the Programming Oversight and Outreach committees of the Local Station Board. Listener donations are fundamental to KPFK's ability to remain free. I have no suggestions at this time of other sources of funding that should be solicited.

Some of the organizations I am affiliated with are: the Council of Black Nurses, the United Nurses Association of California Union of Health Care Professionals, the California Board of Registered Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the Society for the Arts in Healthcare.

The following is a partial list of names of people who nominated me: Lamont Yeakey, Jan Goodman, Jerry Manpearl, Richard Vega, and Edwin Pearl.
